Workshop: Guardians of Common Knowledge

Last Thursday I met with my friend Seema – who I have been working with for the last couple of months on the Guardians of Common Knowledge project- at Furzedown School to watch our toolkit in action.
Seema and the “Guardian Experts” Mich, Chris, Karen and Joe and accompanied by Beth from Up Projects and teachers from the school, guided the group of around 30 pupils in the process of becoming Guardians of their open space.
After an initial session last week and a brief introduction this Thursday at the school, we took the pupils to Tooting Common, their local park, to learn from each of the experts, one of the six specific roles of the Guardians of Common Knowledge, while training their special senses to build a deep connection with their environment.
The pupils seemed to really enjoy the workshop, immersed in their roles and the different activities they got to experiment. Back in the school, they were excited to find out they would receive their own personal log book to document their findings.
Having successfully performed all of the roles during the session, they were also proud to hear that they had now become the new Guardians of Common Knowledge.
As for us, we were happy to see that in addition to the pupils’ great response to the project, the teacher also expressed interest in further developing the activities explored during the workshop.

El jueves pasado me reuní con mi amiga Seema – con quien he estado trabajando durante el último par de meses en el proyecto Guardianes del Conocimiento Común – en la escuela Furzedown para ver nuestro kit de herramientas en acción.
Seema y los “Guardianes Expertos” Mich, Chris, Karen y Joe y acompañados por Beth de UP Projects y profesores de la escuela, guiaron a un grupo de 30 niños en el proceso de convertirse en Guardianes de su espacio abierto.
Después de una sesión inicial la semana pasada y una breve introducción este jueves en la escuela, llevamos a los alumnos a Tooting Common, el parque local, para aprender de cada uno de los expertos, uno de los seis roles epecíficos de los Guardianes del Conocimiento Común, a la vez entrenando sus sentidos especiales y así creando una conexión profunda con su entorno.
Los niños parecieron disfrutar de las diferentes actividades que experimentaron mostrándose realmente inmersos en sus roles. De vuelta en la escuela, se emocionaron al descubrir que recibirían su propia bitácora personal para documentar sus hallazgos.
Después de haber completado con éxito todos los roles durante la sesión, los niños también se enorgullecieron de saber que se habían convertido ahora en los nuevos Guardianes del Conocimiento Común.
En cuanto a nosotros, nos alegramos de ver que, además de la excelente receptividad de los alumnos al proyecto, la profesora también expresó su interés en seguir desarrollando las actividades exploradas durante el taller.
Después de participar en esta sesión como observadora, no puedo esperar la oportunidad de utilizar el kit de herramientas yo misma.
